How To Choose A Blogging Topic That Combines Passion & Profit
"This is just too overwhelming. Maybe I should just quit! " Sarah said as she shrugged her shoulders in defeat.
I wished I could have just reached out and given her a virtual hug.
Sarah was a coaching client of mine. She came to me because she was in trouble.
Her husband has given her an ultimatum....either your blog starts producing an income within the next six months or you quit.
Eighteen months ago, Sarah had started her own blog, chronicling her life as a stay-at-home mom. She spent $5,000 on a web designer and whilst she had a beautiful website with all the bells and whistles, she wasn't making any money from it.
In addition to that, she was spending over $150 a month for various tools and services to keep her blog running.
To make matters even worse, she was sinking countless hours into her blog, hoping to make it work, all whilst neglecting her husband, kids and home.
Not being one to quit easily, Sarah come to me for help.
From the very first session, I knew exactly why her blog had failed to generate an income.
There are 4 elements that all successful blogs - the ones that actually make money - have in common.
1. All successful blogs fall into one of the 12 proven money-making niche topics. These 12 broad topics are vast and have dozens, even hundreds, of smaller sub-topics.
2. The blog is highly targeted and focused on a very specific niche. The broader the topic and the more audiences it covers, the harder it is to gain any traction. In order to make a blog like this successful, you need deep pockets, something most bloggers lack.
3. The blogger is absolutely passionate about their chosen topic and this passion and enthusiasm comes through in their writing.
4. The blog is reader-centric vs blogger centric. This means that the blog focuses on the reader's problems, desires, needs and goals. Now this doesn't mean that you can never write about yourself or share your own experiences and viewpoints. It just means that whenever you do, you ultimately tie it back to your readers wants, needs, goals, problems, desires and dreams.
Let's look at an example of this in action. This is the blog of Dr. Gemma Elizabeth and it's a blog aimed at Homeschoolers. Do you notice how she starts off talking about herself and her love of history and then in the very next paragraph, she turns the focus back to the reader by offering them a homeschooling history reading plan.
Being too focused on herself and her experiences and not tying her content to her reader's wants, needs and desires was the exact mistake Sarah was making. That's why, despite all her efforts over the past 18 months, she wasn't making money.
Now the problem is that finding a topic that meets all these 4 criteria can be challenging. Which is why most people just choose the first topic that comes to mind and start blogging. Then a few months down the line, they wonder why they aren't making any money and they quit.
The problem is that it's hard to choose a topic. Because there are so many potential topics to choose from it's easy to feel overwhelmed. You can follow the advice of going with your passion but you run the risk of choosing a topic that's not profitable which means wasted time and effort. Or you can focus on profit and sacrifice passion, which means that blogging will become a chore for you, a task that you will come to dread.
Sadly, very few bloggers put in the time and effort required to succeed. Which is why so few bloggers actually do.
First, most bloggers aren't making any money. Over 63% of bloggers earn less than $100 a month online. Many bloggers, 17% to be exact, earn between $100 - $499 a month. This is fine if you're running your blog as a hobby. But if you want your blog to replace the income from your day job, less than $500 a month just isn't going to cut it. Only 9% of bloggers earn between $1,000 - $9999 a month. And only 4% earn over $10,000 a month.
And without choosing the right blogging topic (niche), the chances of you succeeding are virtually non-existent. Just randomly choosing a niche from the top of your head isn't going to cut it. Especially in today's ultra-competitive market. The foundation of your blogging success starts with choosing the right niche.
When helping clients to choose a blogging topic I talk about the concept of a blogging sweet-spot: An intersection of a topic that you're passionate about and one that has money making potential as well.
And that's exactly what I help you to nail down in the Brilliant Blog Topic Blueprint Online Course.
This mini-course is focused on helping you to find your blogging sweet spot, that unique intersection of a topic that you're passionate about and one that has proven money-making potential as well.
After working with hundreds of wanna-be bloggers over the years, I've noticed that they fall into 3 distinct categories when it comes to choosing a blogging topic.
On the one hand are those bloggers who have several topic ideas for a blog, but don't know which one to choose. These people are usually passionate and knowledgeable about several different topics. Then come those who would like to start a blog (in most cases to be able to make some money), but they have no idea what to blog about. And then somewhere in between are those who would like to blog about a particular topic. This could be because they want to promote an existing business or because they are passionate about something and they want to get the message out to the world.
Regardless of which camp you fall into, there is something here that can help you.
If you fall into the first category and have too many blogging topics to choose from, then this workshop will show you how to evaluate each blogging topic and choose the best one for you.
If you fall into the second category, and don't know what topic to choose, then by the time you complete this masterclass, you will have uncovered a topic that you're not only passionate about, but one that has tremendous profit potential as well.
If you fall into the third category, you'll learn how to evaluate whether this topic has profit potential or not.
